Special Features of YMCA Academy

  1. BulletGrade 9 and 10 credits offered at Applied levels; Grade 11 and 12 credits focused on student’s career goals, leading to Workplace, Apprenticeship or Community College. (Note: If your child is possibly university bound, there are many alternatives. We would be delighted to discuss the other options with you.)

  2. BulletSchool hours accommodate teenagers: 9.30 a.m. to 3.45 p.m. Monday to Friday.

  3. BulletHighly professional, very experienced teachers committed and dedicated to working with students who need an alternative environment for learning and success in school.

  4. BulletRemediation specialist on staff working with exceptional students; gifted and mild learning disabilities.

  5. BulletCooperative education specialist on staff working with students; job shadowing, career counselling, cooperative education placements from Grade 9-12, credits leading towards OSSD and career opportunities, contacts with YMCA employment centres all across the GTA.

  6. BulletInformation Technology and Media specialist working with students on creative, innovative project-based learning, media studies, digital photography and HD video, and teleconferencing, - using the latest technologies of Web 2.0 including blogs, wikis, and other social networking tools. Students are immersed in a wireless, laptop environment.
  7. BulletScience specialist on staff working with students in modern lab facilities and focusing lessons for experiential learners.

  8. BulletEnglish specialist working with students at all levels of literacy and experienced in curriculum development with the Ministry of Education.

  9. BulletYMCA volunteer mentorship program.

  10. BulletYear Round membership at Metro Central, largest YMCA facility in GTA.

  11. BulletParticipation in YMCA health, fitness, and recreation facilities and outdoor adventure camps.

  12. BulletParticipation in YMCA Student Youth Exchange across Canada.

  13. BulletStudent-Teacher ratio of no more than 15:1.

  14. BulletSchool is housed in completely renovated facility on the 5th floor of the YMCA headquarters, in downtown Toronto, close to libraries, museums, and subway.
