About Our Students

Why the Academy?

The YMCA Academy is designed to work with students who need a personalized, engaging and interactive school setting. Our students benefit from a teacher-mediated curriculum, small class size, individual attention and teachers who approach different learning styles with innovative pedagogy.

Whom do we serve?

We serve high-school-aged students coming from elementary and secondary schools who require experiential and relevant learning strategies.

Some students who join us may have been in alternative school settings, have been home-schooled or tutored, or may need a variety of learning and organizational strategies for success in school.

Where do they go?

College, Workplace, or Beyond.

Students may choose courses offered at the Academy at the Applied level in Grades 9 & 10 and courses in grades 11 & 12 leading to workplace, apprenticeship, or community college.

The Senior Grades at the YMCA Academy offer a unique opportunity to high school students in Ontario. The primary direction of the Academy’s senior years is to focus the student in the career direction of their choice and to guide them in the selection of college level courses, cooperative education options, and job shadowing opportunities.

Senior students may also opt for the workplace where they will be ready to get started in a career of their choice.  Or they may choose a combination of College level courses that lead to College. This can also be a successful option for students who may not be ready academically for University right after grade 12.

At the Academy, students learn about their own learning styles, new ways to study and life skills that will help them be successful in their future endeavors.
