Jan. 24th, 2012 – Evergreen Volunteer Night

The Academy’s own Jessie was honoured recently at Evergreen’s volunteer appreciation night.  The event was held at the Brickworks where Jessie has contributed many hours of volunteer work.  With support from Kaili and her co-op program at the Academy, Jessie’s placement with Evergreen has turned into a rich and rewarding experience that shows no signs of slowing down.  In addition to co-op hours, Jessie has volunteered on his own time in the summer months as well as with the Academy for their spring and fall stewardship program at Downsview Park.  Thanks for all you do, Jessie, and congratulations!

Dec. 12th, 2011 – Children’s Book Project Blog

The Academy Literacy class is hard at work on a series of children’s books for the Central YMCA childcare centre. With a snowy backdrop and some festive tunes as the inspiration, students are writing and illustrating original stories for when the children visit next week. Academy ‘artist-in-residence’ Henry and our wonderful volunteer Peggy have also been lending their amazing art skills to the project.

Oct. 26th, 2011 – Open Studio: Various Projects

It was truly an open studio today in the art room at the Academy!  Eight artists were busy at work on a variety of projects including acrylic painting, Japanese calligraphy, beading, stenciling, painting pumpkins, pottery designing and costume-making (oh, and a math culminating project).  Open Studio runs every Wednesday from 4 – 5pm in the art or math room.  Drop by, say hello and be creative!

Oct. 20th, 2011 – Open Studio: Shodo Art Class

Open studio, the Academy’s weekly art-making space, featured our own Susan Couprie (aka “Revered Mountain”) teaching a Japanese art called Shodo.  Students were taught how to create characters with black ink and special brushes.  Susan learned this art form while living in Japan many years ago.  Stay tuned for more photos from Open Studio in the weeks to come!
