Dear Parents/Guardians of YMCA Academy Students:

Our first semester is coming to a close, and there are several important pieces of information that I want to communicate to you.

Semester 1 Final Examinations:

The last day of regular classes is January 25, 2011.

The examination schedule is enclosed.  Students will also be provided with a copy of this schedule.

As you will see, there are 3 examination days – Wednesday, January 26; Thursday, January 27; and Friday, January 28.  Examinations are held in the morning and in the afternoon.  Not all students have an examination on each day, so please check the schedule carefully to ensure that your son/daughter comes to school on the right day for the right exam.

Absences: If a student is absent on a final exam day, a phone call from a parent/guardian and a medical note will be required. A make-up examination will have to be written as soon as possible.

Study Hall:  We are providing a supervised Study Hall on all examination days. If students are in the school on an exam day, they are expected to be in one of two places:  either writing an examination or in the study hall.  If students are not writing an examination and do not want to attend study hall, they will be asked to leave the school, as we need to ensure an atmosphere of quiet and respect for the other students who are writing their examination.

Personal Items and Electronic Devices:  Students need to be aware that during examinations, they will not be allowed to keep any of their personal items with them. This includes cell phones, I-pods (and similar devices), personal calculators (these will be provided by the Academy when needed), any other electronic devices, classroom notes and/or textbooks (unless allowed specifically by the classroom teacher and designated beforehand).  Students need to come prepared with writing utensils.

Outstanding Materials:  All outstanding library books and materials, as well as Academy-owned textbooks, are to be returned on (or by) the exam day.

If you have any questions about the upcoming examinations, please call the Academy at (416) 928-0124 ext “0”.

Regards,

Don Adams
Head of School

Dec. 17th, 2010 – Have a wonderful holiday!

Dear Friends,

Today is our last day of school before we close for the holidays.  We would like to take this opportunity to wish all of the students, parents, guardians and friends of The Academy a wonderful and safe holiday!  We’d also like to thank you for your continued support over the past year. We value the relationships we have with each of you and look forward to working with you all in 2011.

Wishing you a joyous and peaceful holiday season!

Best Wishes,

The YMCA Academy Staff

Dec. 13th, 2010 – Upcoming Events Schedule

Dear Parents/Guardians:

Just a few reminders about upcoming events/important dates:

  • Wednesday, December 15th is the 2nd annual YMCA Academy Talent show. It will take place at 1:30 p.m. on the 9th floor auditorium (here at 42 Charles Street E – same building as the Academy) and will feature talented acts from Academy students and YMCA staff members alike.  Some of our performances this year include a barbershop quartet, a rap twist on a classic tune, exotic musical instrument solos, a daycare holiday video and many more.  All are welcome to attend.  Please RSVP to bonita.ip@ymcagta.org or call the Academy at 416-928-0124 ext. “0.”  We will be collecting donations for the Strong Kids Campaign at the door.
  • Friday, December 17th is the last day of classes before we break for the holidays – students are expected to be in school on Friday and attendance calls/e-mails will be made if students are not here.
  • The first day of classes in the new year is Tuesday, January 4th, 2011.

Nov. 19th, 2010 – Good News Newsletter Vol. 2

Welcome to the 3rd Edition of the Good News Newsletter.   This school paper came to fruition last year as a result of a purposeful desire to spread good news.  As we looked at the news around us, it didn’t necessarily jive with our world-view at the Academy. The students in the Art of Living class decided that they wanted to do something special to celebrate the YMCA’s International Peace Week, and the newspaper was born.  As a school, we produced two issues last year, and as a result of their success, we have christened the Good News Newsletter our school paper.

As we once again approach Peace Week, we’d like to say happy birthday to the Good News Newsletter, and to acknowledge everyone who works to ensure its’ success.  Thanks to the students and teachers for contributing articles, and for making sure that a wide range of issues, events and trips are covered.  Thank you to IT Guy for the layout, for those with an eye to deadlines, and for the support of everyone who distributes and reads the newsletter.  This publication would not be possible without the time, commitment and caring of many people.  This edition is also generously supported by CIDA, through the YMCA’s International Programs – this will allow us to print some shiny colour distribution copies.

As we launch this edition to coincide with Peace Week, it’s a pleasure to look back on our year so far, to remember the fun times we’ve had – and to look forward to those to come.  Happy peace week to all, on behalf of the students and staff of the YMCA Academy!
