Jul 20th, 2012 – Keilhauer and The YMCA Academy

The YMCA Academy would like to thank Keilhauer for their generous donation of chairs for our new library.

In Sept 2011 The YMCA Academy moved into its new home in the Central YMCA’s north building. The YMCA’s commitment to youth is evident in their stunningly bright and recently remodeled school.

Committed to original design, Keilhauer engineers and manufactures a complete range of office seating and health care seating solutions out of its two Toronto, Ontario facilities. Keilhauer made the revolutionary discovery of gender differences in seated postures and introduced solutions to ensure that both men and women are supported in a task chair, and can adopt postures that bring more oxygenated movement to their bodies. Designed with scrupulous attention to detail, Keilhauer products are built for long life with a conscientious focus on environmental design principles.

The school’s new colours are now complemented by a large selection of Keilhauer chairs.

Keilhauer’s support through their generous gift of chairs (valued at $21,450) is greatly appreciated.

Mar. 26th, 2012 – OSSLT on March 29th, 2012

Dear Parents and Guardians,

On Thursday, March 29, 2012, Grade Ten students across the province, including our students at the YMCA Academy, will be writing the Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test (OSSLT).  The successful completion of the test is a requirement for any student pursuing an Ontario Secondary School Diploma granted by the Ontario Ministry of Education.

This year we have 11 students writing the OSSLT. This number accounts for nearly 37% of our student body and as such, we require the full support of staff and resources at the Academy on the day of the test. To meet the needs of our students and to provide individual accommodations for those writing the OSSLT, we require additional space and staff support on the day of the test.

For this reason, school will be closed on Thursday, March 29, 2012 for all students who are NOT writing the OSSLT. School will resume with regular classes on Friday, March 30, 2012.

If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me at the Academy.

Regards,

Don Adams
Head of School

Feb. 14th, 2012 – TGfU Training Session Details

YMCA Academy faculty members:

Nicole Klement & Zareh Demirdji

were invited to present their Physical Education Program at a Government of Ontario training session for provincially funded after-school youth programs.

The Academy implemented a TGfU program three years ago when staff and students were struggling to play sports with small groups and to have game understanding take precedence over game skills. After one semester of TGfU both staff and students were sold on the program. We have been playing TGfU style games since.

This training session, entitled The YMCA Academy’s teaching Games for Understanding (TGfU) Program, will soon be released as a webinar and currently all materials and resources from the training session can be accessed via the YMCA Academy’s site. (Click here for the Presentation)
